Are our spirit guides really our ancestors?

Spirit guides are traditionally thought of to be 'advanced souls' who return to support us on our human journeys on earth. But what if these mentors assigned to us are actually people related to us from long ago?

The first time I met my spirit guide (during a Reiki treatment), she presented herself to me as a woman in a white robe, with a flower crown resting on her long hair. At the same time, I sensed myself wearing the same clothing.

When I asked this figure in my mind’s eye what her name was, she replied 'Gwenhwyfar' - a Welsh name meaning 'white ghost' or 'fair phantom'. It's also another spelling of the name of the wife of King Arthur, Guinevere.

King Arthur was thought to be a cult figure for the Druids, who its thought had their base in Angelsey in Wales during medieval times. Gwenhwyfar's white robes were similar to druids I'd seen at ceremonies at Stonehenge. I started putting the dots together - I have Welsh heritage, and after a bit of Ancestry-ing found that some of my distant relatives did indeed live in Flintshire and Angelsey in Wales. I began to wonder... is my guide actually my druid ancestor?

Many people see visions of their guides as stereotypical 'wise ones' - it used to be common to have Native Indian guides, Tibetan monk guides and so on. I believe that our guides (if they choose to present to us in human form at all) will appear as avatars which will chime with us in some way and feel familiar. In my case, I began to learn about and practice druidry, which gave me insight into not only Welsh folklore and traditions but experience of honouring the seasons and the earth with ritual.

Have you met your spirit guide(s)? Do you think they could be our ancestors? Let me know in the comments.
