If you are interested in developing mediumship abilities, one of the recommended approaches is to spend time communing with the spirit world, also called 'sitting in the power'.
This phrase was coined by esteemed medium Glyn Edwards, and it is similar to meditation, except during a meditation the mind is encouraged to be still. In sitting in the power, the mind is focusing on expanding the sitter's 'awareness' of being part of the great consciousness/universe or God.
Techniques for sitting in the power vary slightly, however a fairly standard approach is to sit comfortably, breathing slowly and deeply, and then become aware of a light emanating from the solar plexus area (around the stomach). This is the light of your soul being. As you breathe, gradually expand this light to the whole of your body, and then outwards from your body, until the white light is filling the space around you, then the room, and even outwards towards the sky. Imagine then, the light of all the souls in spirit joining yours. This is called blending. During this process you may become aware of the 'presence' of spirit, and sense them around you.
Sitting in the power is not meant as an exercise for communication with spirit or receiving messages from spirit guides. The practice is believed to enhance a medium's ability to hold a connection with spirit when they do attempt communication. It also enables spirit to 'work behind the scenes' with a medium, almost like upgrading their software. It is important to sit on a regular basis, as this shows commitment to working with the other world.
Sometimes, physical sensations may occur while sitting in the power, you may feel tingles, cobwebs on your face, your body may feel heavy, or bigger or smaller as you sit quietly. These sensations are normal (especially for newer mediums) but sometimes unexpected!
